The USA Men’s National team was selected earlier today after the Americans convincingly won a friendly against Puerto Rico. It was a game in which the Puerto Ricans held their ground and experienced guards Arroyo and Barea managed to keep the game tight till the end of the second quarter. After that the USAB team dominated and took home the win in this preparation game before the 2014 FIBA World Cup. Coach K has also announced the 12 man squad that will travel to Spain next week. Although there were some predictions that they will bring couple of extra players, the staff decided to bring only 12 players. This means that four players from the initial 16 man squad that started these preparations were cut off. The list included All-Star guard Damian Lillard, which was a little bit of a surprise, and the other three players were guard/forwards Chandler Parsons, Gordan Hayward and experienced swing-man and best three point shooter in the game Kyle Korver.
The rest of the squad includes: Guards: Stephen Curry, James Harden, Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson / Forwards: Rudy Gay, DeMar DeRozan, Kenneth Faried, Mason Plumlee / Centers: Anthony Davis, DeMarcus Cousins, Andre Drummond.
Coach K stressed out after the game that he is excited about the 12 man roster that he and his assistants selected and that it was a tough process of selection, especially in the guards department. He gave advantage to Derrick Rose because he showed good form and great play in their first exhibition game against Brazil and also stated that all players want to play with Rose.
This team is clearly not the same from the one that competed two years ago in the London Olympics, but they still have the power to compete for a gold medal. Some of the players that will need to exceed expectations on this world cup are Anthony Davis, James Harden and Stephen Curry. These three alongside with Kyrie Irving will represent the core of the team for the upcoming World Cup.
